MLK Ave. Placemaking Illustrations / City of Flint
Illustration & Placemaking Design
The MLK Ave. Placemaking Illustrations were created to honor the culture, history, and resilience of Flint’s MLK Ave. neighborhood. Originating from a collaboration with the University of Michigan-Flint’s Design Studio, the project sought to develop a visual identity system that would foster community pride and encourage positive social and economic change.
Black Markers contributed by designing a series of six digital portraits to complement the neighborhood’s visual identity. The series features Martin Luther King, Jr., alongside five influential community members chosen by residents of MLK Ave. to highlight their lasting contributions.
In partnership with the City of Flint, University of Michigan-Flint, and the Mass Transportation Authority (MTA), the illustrations were installed at bus stops throughout the neighborhood. By bringing art into public spaces, the project transforms everyday locations into vibrant celebrations of the community’s story and spirit.
